Masdevallias, though often thought to be difficult, are definitely one of the most beautiful of all orchids. We have chosen to propagate only those varieties that are well known to be vigorous, and, as in the case of Masd. coccinea and Masd. veitchiana, the most spectacular of all Masdevallias.

The conditions for most Masdevallias should be shady, moist and as cool as possible. We find they do best for us out of doors in Southern California, although there are a few here (notably Copper Angel) that will do nicely as windowsill plants indoors. Abundant clean (drinking) water is always appreciated. All plants are nice large flowering size plants..

We offer Masdevallias of three distinct groups:

hybrids
coccinea
veitchiana

Long considered the national treasure of Peru, Masdevallia Veitchiana is certainly one of the world's most beautiful orchids. It is rumored to have been cultivated by the Incas centuries ago. This species has unbelievable sizzling orange flowers covered in a pattern of small purple hairs that createt a kind of iridescence as the flower moves in the breezes. The blooms are very large, approximately 5 cm. X 15 cm. Coming from high in the Andes, they definitely prefer cooler and moist conditions. We grow it out-of-doors easily along the coast in Southern California. These are nice flowering-size multiple lead plants. The varioius cultivars are listed to help the collector round out his or her collection more comprehensively.
