Tropical calanthes are one of the oldest orchids used in hybridizing.

Don't let the word 'tropical' scare you off! The first calanthe hybrid was made in 1860 by Veitch using Cal. rosea and Cal. vestita. In modern times, the Eric Young Foundation, on the Isle of Jersey in the U.K. has promoted the breeding of this popular orchid.

Some years back we were able to acquire high quality plants from Allen Moon at the E.Y.F. to begin our own line of breeding (these are the letter/number series you will see referenced in the descriptions below). Everyone who has seen these hybrids is truly impressed by their beauty. The plants form large palm-like light green leaves in the growing season (Spring into Summer) and go decidiuous in the Fall to Winter season. It is at this time that the majestic spikes develop, reaching up 10-20" before cascading downward for a stunning display. The flowers last for months when bloomed under cool and dry conditions, at which time watering should be done sparingly; once every 2-3 weeks. Because of the mixed gene pool, it is difficult to precisely predict the exact color of the offspring, much like the Miltoniopsis group but the dominant color is semi-alba,  pure white with a deep red 'eye' in the center.

This is a perfect plant for Christmas decorating or gift giving. All are nice plants in 3-4" pots and will likely bloom this coming season. Plants priced at $20 each or try three for $50.00 and make your own calanthe basket!
